Had a 1/2 day trip booked for today for Stripers, and after getting to the ramp early, thought it best to reconsider due to higher winds than predicted! The lake was churning, big swells in open water with white caps on top of white caps, so called my client and suggested we try it another time to which he agreed. Soooooo, seeing as how I’m already on the water I decided I’d use this time to to do some testing and validation on some new NAVICO products.
Had three (3) units running and I’m seeing tons of shad, but wait, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I’m seeing lots of bigger arches amongst the shad, on all three units! Hmmmm, (said to self), I wonder? ? ? ? ? ? So, back to the truck for rods and throw net!! After gathering and loading necessary gear in the boat off I go to catch bait and see if electronics were telling the truth. Found a big bait ball and made a one and done throw on a school of perfect Striper sized shad, putting a 100+ baits in the bait tank. Back to the area where I’d been marking big arches, and sure’nuff they were still there.
Lowered trolling motor, set on anchor mode and started baiting up rods, lowering them down to the depth I was marking big arches. Bada boom, Bada bang, game on!!! Kept five for the skillet and released twelve more, missed at least a dozen. Biggest Striper for day was right at eleven pounds, solid five/six lb average. A very pleasant day and kicking myself for canceling the trip, but not very hard kicks because I still put the safety and comfort of my clients at my top priority. I didn’t catch’em all and will be ready to redeem myself on another day with a good client!
Till next time,
Tight Lines
