Another great day of Blue Cat, fish CATCHING fun on a breezy and warm April day at Keystone Lake! I had the extreme pleasure to host Monte Sprouts, his son Taylor and good friend Jim on a catfish outing on Keystone and without a doubt I enjoyed the trip every bit as much as they did!
The goal for the day (per Monte) was to just enjoy the day on the water and hopefully catch some fish and thankfully both goals were met and exceeded! Upon arriving at the lake in preparation for their arrival I have to admit I was somewhat frustrated with the more than a little windy conditions, but as it panned out, the wind was our friend and the area we were fishing wasn’t really all that bad. Had it not been for the wind we had though, I’m afraid it would have been pretty toasty on the water!!
Shortly after getting anchored up, rods baited and set, the action began and stayed pretty steady throughout the first half of the trip! We had to move locations just a short distance away though, and the action resumed! All the Blues averaged a solid 6-10 pounds each with a couple pushing 12 pounds. I stayed pretty busy (the kind of busy I love) netting fish, baiting and re-setting rods etc and I plain ole didn’t do a very good job of picture taking, but I know Taylor took several and will post them up when I get copies from him!
We did enjoy a particularly surprising catch for the day when a 20+ pound Flathead decided it liked our offering of fresh cut shad and gave Jim a memorable tussle to the boat! When Jim was finally able to get it alongside for netting and it came to the surface, I have to admit I was pretty stoked! In the past 20+ years of catfishing, this was only the second Flathead I’ve personally seen take cut bait. Oh I know, it happens, but not very often so it was kinda cool!
We actually cut the trip short by a bit as the 100 quart cooler was stuffed with catfish and everyone aboard felt like they’d had just the right amount of fish catching fun! By time the filleting ended, they took home three stuffed full gallon bags of prime Keystone Lake catfish fillets!
Thank You so much Monte, Taylor and Jim for a wonderful day on the water! It’s folks just like you who make me love what I do that much more!! I look forward to having y’all back aboard again soon in the quest for more rod bending, line stretching, fish catching fun!!
