Birch Lake - 6/26
On Saturday the 26th I was asked along with a group of four other guides to assist in taking a group of 20 folks from GSI on a fishing outing on Birch Lake. I had the privilege of having Jay Boykin and his two sons, Phillip & Drew and another young man Caleb in my boat. I'd not been on Birch for many years so I followed one of the other guides to an area to get a feel for the lake. We found a very definite thermo cline at 15 ft all throughout the lower basin of the lake so we concentrated on keeping our baits just above the thermo cline and fished around humps and ridges that came close or slightly above it. It didn't take long to start finding lots of fish hanging right at and just above the thermo cline and by slow trolling lively shad in front of them we soon began to start catching them. While it wasn't constant bent rods and catching, we did manage to catch enough to keep us out there on the search for more. Several times throughout the morning Jay would mention something about the last hour being the best, and how he knew, I'll never know, but during the last hour of fishing the fish really turned on and fun was had by all!
Thank You Jay, Phillip, Drew & Caleb for a wonderful day on the water. You were all quite gracious and a pleasure to have in my boat. Hope we can do it again soon!
