Didn’t have a trip booked for yesterday and was invited to join good friends (Bud’s) Dan Brown & Jake LaFlore as they went in search of new waters to fish. In discussing possible areas I suggested Chouteau Bend & when I threw in the idea of bringing along snagging gear for Spoonbill, it was a no brainier, “The Bend” won out!
Arriving at the Bend, we were met with higher water levels than last week and loads of current as they were releasing a good volume of water from Lake Hudson and holding water back in Ft Gibson Lake. Water temps were right at 54 degrees, fairly light north easterly breezes and lots of sunshine!!!
Long story short, after picking a long time favorite cast/snagging spot, we anchored up & I gave Dan & Jake a quick lesson on how to cast & snag and they both started casting & jerking attempting to catch their first ever Spoonbill! Wasn’t long before Jake tied into his first ever spoonbill, got it in and CPR’d then moments later when snagging resumed, heard the words FISH ON followed a second later by ME TOO!!! WOO-HOO, doubles! Had a ball helping to land both fish as both Dan & Jake worked deftly to keep lines untangled.
After catching and releasing a 4th Spoonie we decided to attempt finding a few White Bass for a change of pace. We never found them stacked up anywhere in numbers, but picked at them getting one or two here, one or two there the rest of the day and after speaking with several other anglers found that to be the same with them as well.
All in all a GREAT DAY on the water with my “BUD’s” then got to break in my new “Bubba Blade” fillet knives on about a dozen big fat White Bass at the dock when we came in!!! Phewww, the BUBBA’s are da bomb!!
